Thar desert Dunes

I was visiting my in-laws who are putting up in Barmer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barmer_district) back in February 2013 for the first time after my wedding . It was a lovely pink weather back then in Rajasthan . We happened to visit the sand dunes of Thar desert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thar_Desert) and it was amazing at that time of the year . I would highly recommend winters if you are ever planning a Rajasthani get-away . Plan out a weekend such that you reach Jaisalmer in the afternoon ,go-about Jaisalmer all day and towards the dawn head towards Thar .

Places to visit in Jaisalmer :

Jaisalmer Fort also known as Sonar Quila .

Patwon-Ji-Ki-Haveli

Godi Sagar Lake.

You can halt at the many desert safari camps that you shall see on the way . We stayed at the Rajasthan Desert Safari (http://www.desertsafarijaisalmer.com/index.html)camp . They have this really awesome cultural programme that consists of dances and songs performed by the fold artists from around that region . This is followed by traditional Rajasthani Buffet . The next morning you can book your camel ride and go see the sunrise and sunsets at the famous sand dunes not very far from your camp .

Word of advisory :

1. Confirm all your package inclusions on arrival to avoid confusion later .

2. You can manage to get some cold drinks and lite munchies at the dunes so no need to stack up your bag with these things ’cause you shall need to walk over the dunes for a while and you donot want to be overloaded .

3. It can get pretty chilly so make sure to have the necessary warm clothes alongwith .

4. Sand dunes get pretty glary when its sunny so make sure you have good shades .

5. Even if its cloudy wear lots of sunscreen! Trust me.

6. Avoid wearing polyester socks

7. Ideal time window to visit would be from mid december to mid january . February is kind if bland and it gets pretty boring at the camp because not many people come around that time .

Qutab Minar on a cloudy day

qutub minar6 qutub minar5 qutub minar

Its been roughly six months since I’ve shifted to Delhi . However it wasn’t until my younger sister visited me here that I got the chance to see this historic city jewel . Flanked by the massive Minar itself , it is a beautiful place to visit , underlining that its not be visited on a sunny day or-else the stony glare and heat might  drive you grumpy and parched . However its a pure architectural/historical delight on a cloudy drizzly day . I would personally not like to write about the history here because the best way is to witness each structure standing there and read about it  simultaneously .

Word of advisory : 1. Please make sure you are wearing closed shoes ’cause the stones are mostly slippery and hot and you definitely don’t need blisters 🙂 . Wearing skin hugging lowers /shirts is highly unrecommended !!

2. Be prepared to embrace a really long ticket counter queue .The counter is across the road just in case you’re wondering how to get to it .

3. Carry some water/soft drink and a light snack because its a long tour inside and you get nothing to munch or sip upon inside .

4. Lastly , donot get there empty stomach or you shall be seriously starved . You don’t really find good food around the place .
